What does a Fleet Manager do?
Fleet managers are also known as Transport Managers or Assistant Transport Managers.
A fleet manager or assistant transport manager doesn’t hold the level 3 transport manager qualification, the fleet /assistant transport manager work’s within the traffic office assisting the Transport Manager.
A fleet/assistant transport manager will play a part in managing the flow of goods from the point of origin to their final destination.
- This may have a number of stops.
- This is defined as Logistics.
Having extensive industry knowledge, combined with top-quality customer service, careful planning, and efficient administration service, is invisible to a customer but forms the basis of a successful traffic office.
Much of the reasoning behind the decisions made within a transport office will rely on the geographical knowledge of the UK, sometimes maybe further afield, of the office staff.
Alongside this, having knowledge of the rules and regulations governing HGVs and their operation would also influence how decisions are made.
It is vital that an employee meets the required standards to succeed within a transport office, but these may not be skills that are proven with an exam at school or a degree.
These are life skills, often only picked up through experience.
Amongst the skill-set transport an employer will expect is:
- Knowledge of rules and regulations in the HGV industry
- Good knowledge of the road network to maximise efficiency
- Ability to retain information relating to distribution centres and their geographical location
- Knowledge of a variety of vehicles, specifications and their limitations to maximise fleet utilisation
- The ability to work as a team, but able to use own initiative and act calmly under pressure
- Reasonable IT skills
- Excellent communication skills, as the job will often involve dealing with customers, maybe by email, in person or by telephone
- developing long-term working relationships with internal and external customers
- To demonstrate care and accuracy when taking necessary details
The role of a fleet/assistant transport manager may appear very complex and daunting, but the Transport Manager makes the final decision overall.
