• Risk Management: The transportation manager is responsible for assessing and managing the risks associated with the fleet of vehicles they are responsible for. This involves planning and executing effective training and development programmes and ensuring that drivers follow the rules and regulations to ensure the safety of the fleet.

• Scheduling and Optimisation: In order to ensure the most efficient use of all the vehicles in the fleet, the transportation manager must be able to create and manage effective schedules. This includes ensuring that load and vehicle assignments are optimised and that drivers are following all routes and schedules.

• Vehicle Maintenance: As part of their role, the transportation manager needs to make sure that the vehicles are regularly serviced so as to maximise the longevity and reliability of the fleet. Qualifications & Certification

In order to become a transport manager in the UK, you must acquire a professional qualification known as the Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). You do not need a driving licence. Afterwards, the vehicle operator for whom you are working must appeal to the relevant traffic commissioner or the Transport Regulation Unit (if in Northern Ireland) for your approval in order to commence employment. Furthermore, should you be found to have been convicted of a crime or received a penalty for violating UK or EU transport norms, then your application may be denied. To remain a certified transporter, your knowledge must be kept up-to-date.

If you have more than 10 years’ experience

Those with 10 or more years of experience in managing fleets of vehicles may be able to meet the requirements without obtaining the CPC, as long as they are working for a van operator transporting goods out of the UK, or vans or cars towing trailers. This qualification will stand until May 21, 2025; and after this point, the CPC qualification will be necessary to stay registered as a transport manager.
