What is the maximum weight that can be safely lifted by an individual?

Yet another reason why training is essential as there is no legal maximum weight that a person can safely lift or push, etc. A decision on whether a manual handling task can be performed cannot be reached through a maximum legal weight limit.

The HSE does not recommend weight limits. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) guidance gives basic guideline figures for lifting and lowering, which indicate when a more detailed risk assessment should be carried out.
