It’s frustrating, especially when you’ve put the hours in and felt like you knew the subject.

But before you go back through the same notes, revise in exactly the same way and book another exam, there’s something worth asking:

What will you do differently this time?

Passing your Transport Manager CPC Case Study resit isn’t necessarily about learning everything all over again.

It’s about working out where you lost marks, strengthening the areas you struggled with and getting better at turning what you know into the answers the examiner is looking for.

You might know far more about transport management than your result suggests.

Now you need to turn that knowledge into marks.

Here’s what to concentrate on before your next CILT Transport Manager CPC Case Study resit.

What Is the Transport Manager CPC Case Study Exam?

The Case Study is one of the two assessments you need to pass to achieve the CILT(UK) Level 3 Certificate of Professional Competence for Transport Managers.

Unlike the multiple-choice paper, the Case Study asks you to apply your knowledge to realistic workplace scenarios.

For the current CILT Road Haulage qualification:

• Exam time: 2 hours 15 minutes
• Marks available: 60
• Pass mark: 30
• CILT advice: Attempt all case study questions

And that last bit matters.

You don’t need 60 out of 60. You need to collect enough marks across the paper to pass.

Why Do People Fail the Transport Manager CPC Case Study?

There isn’t one single reason.

It could be:

• Gaps in knowledge
• Calculations
• Driver scheduling
• Vehicle costing
• Maintenance planning
• Poor time management
• Misreading the question
• Struggling to apply knowledge to the scenario

But there’s another issue we see regularly:

Knowing the subject isn’t the same as knowing how to answer the question.

You could spend hours learning drivers’ hours, operator licensing, maintenance and vehicle costing.

But if you don’t apply that knowledge correctly to the scenario in front of you, you can still lose marks.

That’s why simply reading your notes again may not be enough.

For your resit, you need to practise using what you know.

1. Work Out What Went Wrong

Before you start revising again, think about your previous attempt.

Where did you struggle?

Was it calculations? Driver scheduling? Vehicle costing? Maintenance planning? Remembering legislation?

Or did you understand the subjects but struggle to work out what the questions actually wanted?

Maybe you simply ran out of time.

Be honest with yourself here.

There’s little point spending three weeks revising a subject you’re already comfortable with while avoiding the area that may have cost you marks.

Your Transport Manager CPC resit revision should be targeted.

Work on your weaknesses, not just the bits you enjoy.

2. Practise Case Studies – Don’t Just Read About Them

This is one of the biggest changes you can make.

You wouldn’t learn to drive a lorry simply by reading a book about driving one.

Case studies aren’t much different.

You need to do them.

CILT provides sample Transport Manager CPC papers, including Road Haulage Paper 2, which can be used as part of your exam preparation.

Regular case study practice helps you get used to:

• Reading scenarios
• Finding relevant information
• Understanding what each question wants
• Applying legislation
• Completing calculations
• Structuring answers
• Working under time pressure

And don’t complete one paper and think:

“Right, I’ve cracked it.”

Keep going.

Different scenarios force you to think differently, which is exactly what you need before the real exam.

3. Answer the Question You’ve Actually Been Asked

This sounds obvious.

Under exam pressure, it isn’t always.

You spot a subject you recognise and immediately start writing everything you know about it.

Don’t.

Read the question properly first.

Look at the instruction.

Are you being asked to:

Explain? Calculate? Identify? Evaluate? Prepare? Outline?

Those words matter.

If you’re asked to calculate something, writing a page explaining the legislation isn’t necessarily going to earn the marks you need.

Before answering, ask yourself:

“What exactly is this question asking me to do?”

Then answer that question.

4. Know the Areas That Will Always Be Tested

If you’re preparing for the current Road Haulage Transport Manager CPC Case Study, there are three particularly important areas.

CILT identifies three assessment criteria that will always be tested in each Case Study assessment:

Driver Scheduling

You need to be able to compile and evaluate schedules for drivers.

Maintenance Planning

You need to understand how to construct and evaluate an effective and compliant maintenance plan.

Vehicle Costing

You need to be able to calculate and prepare operating costs, understand correct pricing and recognise the value of a vehicle costing system.

Other areas from Paper 2 can also be tested, so this doesn’t mean you only need to revise these three subjects.

But if driver scheduling, maintenance planning or vehicle costing is currently one of your weak spots, it deserves some attention before your resit.

5. Get Comfortable With the Calculations

Calculations make some learners nervous.

Avoiding them and hoping they don’t appear isn’t much of an exam strategy.

Practise them.

Then practise them again.

More importantly, understand the method rather than memorising an answer from a previous practice paper.

The numbers and scenario can change.

If you understand the method, you can apply it when you’re faced with completely different figures in your actual exam.

That’s the difference between remembering an answer and understanding how to solve the problem.

6. Use the Case Study Scenario

It’s called a Case Study for a reason.

The scenario isn’t just background information.

CILT’s specification explains that information needed to help answer questions is provided through the case study and supplementary scenario information. You then need to apply the knowledge gained through your studies to that workplace scenario.

So use what you’ve been given.

Look carefully at:

• Vehicles
• Drivers
• Journeys
• Times
• Costs
• Maintenance arrangements
• Any other information included in the scenario

As you read it, keep asking yourself:

“Why have they given me this information?”

It may become very important when you start answering the questions.

7. Manage Your Time and Chase the Marks

You currently have 2 hours and 15 minutes to collect 60 marks in the Road Haulage Case Study.

Don’t spend a huge chunk of that time fighting with one part of one question.

If you’re completely stuck, move on and come back to it if you have time.

Remember, CILT advises learners to attempt all of the case study questions.

Sometimes the difference between failing and passing isn’t suddenly knowing another 20 pages of legislation.

It can simply be collecting the marks you were capable of getting in the first place.

8. Don’t Rush Straight Into Your CPC Resit

You’ve failed.

You’re frustrated.

You just want the qualification finished.

We understand the temptation to find the next available CILT CPC resit and think:

“I’ll just have another crack at it.”

But ask yourself:

What’s going to be different this time?

If you haven’t identified what went wrong, strengthened your knowledge or changed your exam technique, you risk making the same mistakes again.

There’s no prize for taking your resit as quickly as possible.

The aim is to pass it.

Do I Have to Retake Both Transport Manager CPC Exams?

Not necessarily.

Under the current CILT Road Haulage specification, you need to pass both Paper 1 and Paper 2 to achieve the qualification.

If you don’t achieve one of the papers, a resit of that paper only is required.

So, if you’ve already passed your multiple-choice exam and only have the Case Study remaining, you can concentrate on getting through that final hurdle.

• Can I handle the calculations?
• Can I finish within the available time?
• Am I consistently achieving the results I need on practice papers?

If the answer is yes, you’re in a much stronger position to take your resit.
